Master Yao Zongxun (Ji Xiang)
Master Yao Zongxun (1917-1985)
was born in Hang Country Zhejiang Province, graduated in China University,
lived in Beijing all his life. He became Grandmaster Wang's student when
he was 20 years old. Though younger than many other famous students, he
was learning YiQuan faster. Later, Mr. Yao Zongxun showed incredible learning
abilities and received the title of "Ji Xiang" from Grandmaster
Wang, as confirming him as Wang's successor. Wang said, " I have
transmitted all my skills to Zongxun. Now I know my art will not be disseminated."
Yao Zongxun proved his skills in many fights, often even substituting
to his master, when Wang Xiangzhai was challenged. In 1940s,
he fought many times against street gangs which were proliferous at that
time in Beijing. In this way he got much more experience in real combat.
A Japanese master said
after being defeated by Yao, "Even an 8th Dan Judo couldn't won me
in such a simple way as Master Yao did".
During the period of Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Yao Zongxun with
his family, was sent to work in the countryside. Even during this extremely
unfavorable period he continued to practice and to teach his sons - twin
brothers Yao Chengguang and Yao Chengrong.
In late 1970s, Yao came back to Beijing and in more favorable conditions
and
he started to propagate YiQuan extensively. He used to explained YiQuan
with scientific theories and physical education references.
On October 21th 1984, Yao created Beijing Institute of YiQuan Martial
Art, with the support of the Beijing Sports Committee and the Wushu
Society.
In 1985, Yao's book "YiQuan" was published in Hong Kong, with
the support of Mr. Huo Zhenhuang, Vice Chairman of Asia Wushu Union.
In 1989 this book was also published in Mainland China by the Press of
Beijing Sports College.
